Victory in the War for Talent belongs
to you. Organizations have run the white flag up the pole.
In this contemporary labor vs. management frey, labor claimed the
day. Peace talks have begun. A cease fire has been ordered—all
is quiet on the front. But why does the victory feel so shallow
and hollow? Where are the spoils of the war? The commentators proclaim
the reasons are generational (boomers, X, Y & Next et al) will
require us to make a sea change or paradigm shift and adjust to
the new economy with all of its promise and challenge. From our
perspective, the right job is a great
place to start.
Today's competitive marketplace requires that we make precise and
wise career choices. In the changing environment that some are calling
a nuclear winter for careers, you must continually adjust your strategies
and practices -- while keeping your bearing on the fundamentals
of your career. Career success is based on the interaction of countless
variables. But only one propels you from the possible to the actual.
That variable is the right job.
The right job! That sounds so simple.
The impact of right job on a person's personal and professional
life is well documented. Yet, great jobs are hard to find.
The idea of permanent job is not longer realistic. We now think
of a career in terms of a series of projects. Our benefits and pensions
are portable. We have shifted our loyalty from one employer to our
profession. We have become "specialists." Yet, the experts
say we must become "generalists." A career path in the
technology age is no longer a series of jobs with increasing responsibilities
in the same profession - it will become a series of professions.
We must become multi-professional to find career fulfillment in
the technology age. We must manage our careers very carefully.
