Recruiting—an "Art" or a "Science"?

Tension exists between a high touch and a high tech approach to recruiting. Tension exists between the art and the science of recruiting. As human capitalists we are always seeking the optimum balance between the opposing forces. The high tech or scientific approach is appealing because it suggests a process that is repeatable, predictable and measurable in terms of execution, quality and cost. The overly scientific methods gain efficiencies at the expense of the human element. The way of the artist can sacrifice expediency, scalability, and efficiency in order to maintain its high touch methodology.

I believe OnDemand Recruiting is the blend of science and art that is right for this time and this place. OnDemand Recruiting was an outgrowth of introducing finely tuned third party recruiting technology (competitive name-gathering, cold calling recruitment, interviewing, managing the candidate though the recruitment process, negotiation and closing the deal) into corporate organizations that were seeking new recruiting solutions to talent needs. The integration of the “best of third party search” with corporate recruiting with its relationship with the team, its appreciation for cultural fit; its greater understanding of business impact of talent, the art of negotiating the corporate landscape; and its closeness to the mission of the organization.

Marvin Smith, Principal Consultant has over three decades of human capital identification experience in both in-the-trenches corporate recruiting and high-impact third party executive recruiting. During this time frame, Marvin has met the recruiting needs of over 300 industry diverse firms – for senior and middle level professionals as well as, key individual contributors in a variety of functional areas (finance, marketing/sales, operations, and engineering/technical).
